IRR Call up: From Northern California to Baghdad

One month already!?

One month down, 11 to go!  I guess time does fly when you’re having fun.  Its not that time goes by fast here... it just goes by.  The month started off pretty quiet, but unfortunately the country has had a terrible couple of days. I haven't been here long enough to really gauge the progress.  It seems uneven, but generally positive (0.8 steps forward, 0.3 steps back).

So far, it’s been quite an education.  With one of my jobs, I've got a chance to be part of the team which supports infrastructure development including Power facilities, Oil Pipelines, and water treatment plants, etc. The Iraqis are running the show while we try to keep our safety nets in place.  Its quiet a scene to watch all the parts, players, and obstacles converge trying to get the cardiovascular system of a nation to function.  That is not even taking into account the “special” challenges that Iraq faces. In fact, it’s possible that the same issues that New Orleans is now facing (maintenance, production, material, politics, etc) pose a larger challenge in Iraq than those awful attention-seeking car bombers.

Thanks to everyone who's commented on the blog and written e-mails.  The notes are all greatI find it takes me three to five days to write ONE email sometimes.... as I'll start it, get pulled off on something... start again five hours later..... get pulled into a meeting, etc.  So, sorry I don't write much, but I appreciate your thoughts.

John,
Sounds like you are keeping busy there. I finally figured out how to post a reply here. I guess with the new format you need to register and sign in. The Hokies are looking good. The beat NC State to start the season off 20-16, then went down to Duke and shut them out 45-0. Then came the home opener at the newly refurbished Lane Stadium where we decided to duplicate the Duke game and beat Ohio University 45-0 as well. Last week Georgia Tech came up to Blacksburg thinking they were the 15th ranked team in the Country and got beat 51-7 (YIKES!) Score a blocked field goal returned for a TD, 7 points for the special teams; 2 Interceptions in 3 plays returned for TD's, 14 points for the Defense; and the offense didn't want to be outdone, so they decided to add 30 to that. GT isn't ranked anymore and VT moved up from number 4 to number 3 in the good 'ol USA!

Before the Ohio game we also at the B2 Bomber do a flyover. That was something else (I'm sure you've witnessed that.) Couldn't hear a thing, only thing you noticed is the big black triangle in the air and the air rustling on the ground.

Stay Safe,
Dave N.

John,

Sounds like things are getting a little hairy there these days what with the elections coming. I hope you're finding refuge in the pools and not getting too close to any windows;)
Just to keep you up to date on this side of the world, Alyssa's starting kindergarten and doing pretty well -- she loves the whole school thing, homework and all! Haley is well...Haley. She knocked over the glass table the other day and blew out the lamp and then stood there looking at me like I was crazy. As for the rest of us, Sheila, Kona, and I are fine and hoping you're the same.

Regardless of the politics, you guys are doing a good thing -- I hope something takes hold in this whole mess. So, shake another soldier's hand for me and tell all your buds we care for you guys.

Take care,
Tony
