IRR Call up: From Northern California to Baghdad

Moving on to CRC

After a month of fun in the Arizona sun, it looks like our time here is coming to an end.  We've finally received some actual “Request for Orders” which have given us the next clue in our assignments.  The break down for our group is about what we expected:  50% Multi-National Force-Iraq Corps Assignments, 45% Division/Bde Iraq/Afghanistan Assignment, 5% Centcom - Florida.  As it turns out, I'm going to Iraq with the first group, which has its Pros & Cons.  All assignments are like a Box of Chocolates...

Within the next couple weeks we'll be moving on to a “CONUS Replacement Center “ (CRC) in Ft Bliss, TX to make final preparations, equipment issues, and briefings.  We'll be there a little while before moving on into theater.

Our time here at Ft. Huachuca has been instructive.  If nothing else, we are leaving with a stack of CDs filled with reference material.  I figure all hostilities will probably be over by the time I read through all the material on them!   To be sure, there are a lot of  good lessons being learned and good work being done both in theater as well as back here in the States.  I just hope its is all put to maximum effectiveness!

Weren't all the IRR folks *supposedly* called up to valid fill vacancies? Or are they just throwing out the dragnet, then training and assigning the folks who actually respond to the mob orders and pass SRP?

Perhaps you have realized this already...
It does appear that IRR officers (especially field grade)tend to get assigned to the non-rotating MACOMS (MNFI, CENTCOM, CJTF76/CFCA, CFLCC, etc). There is a recurrent need for individual augmentation of these headquarters. Can't all be filled by active-duty folks. Most critical positions are filled by the active-duty officers. If I were to guess, you will get plugged into a massive staff section headed by an active-duty officer. You may or may not be an expected arriveal. If a miracle occurs (rarely)you may actually have an overlap with the departing officer. The good news is that your boss will understand you have not been active-duty in some time. After about 11 months, you will be rotated out individually. Could be a lot worse. This hapened to me at CJTF-76 (Afghanistan). Best of luck. Oh yes - CRC Bliss is Kuwait/Iraq, Benning is Afghanistan.

BWAHAHAHA. That's just beautiful. MAJ B was able to provide more information in a few short sentences than HRC-St. Louis could in several months!

I'd say send the folks from "Human Resources" to the front for a while, but who would want to serve next to them anyway?

MAJ B's comments are great and we've heard the same from other sources as well (not much info at all from HRC, BTW). It does seem there is an increase recently in units supporting Afghan assignemts. A staff job does appear to be in our future... just what that staff position will be probably gets decided only once we are standing inside the TOC!

Right on about Afghanistan. The headquarters name is CFC-A in Kabul and it is growing. CJTF76 in Bagram (AFG) is fairly stable and fed/staffed by the largest active duty unit in theatre(whether it is 10th MTN, 25th IN, or now SETAF). CFC-A, like MNF-I, has no pre-deployment existence (if that makes any sense)so it is fed by individual active and reserve augmentees.
I am guessing - and this may be off the topic - that as the Guard/Reserve footprint begins to shrink (and it will) next year that there will be a smaller need for IRR officers. UA's will not deploy with shortages. Only those MACOMs I mentioned previously will need the augmentee staffing and it is fairly slim pickings in the IRR. For a hundred reasons.
take care.
