"hard start MOS"

ok so my baby brother is at basic training in GA.. 1 week after being there he was informed that he was a "hard start MOS" and as a result of that he would leave traing early to go to AIT in VA. well, another result of that is that he will leave 1 week prior to his unit's graduation gate. he would grad but not walk/participate in any events related to grad (family day, grad ceremony, etc.) he is very confused because 2 weeks later they said he may be able to walk with another unit at grad. he said he can't get any definite answers about this issue. we miss him like crazy and feel like our family is being cheated by not being able to see him grad with his unit that he will grad with hnors with... can anyone help me with a possible explanation or maybe what we should do?

I need advice!

My wife just came down with cancer, so she'll need insurance for the rest of her life. However, I am totally miserable in the Army. My wife tells me to go to OCS, that I'd be happier as an officer, but I don't believe that I would be. Besides, there's no guarantee that I'd pass it, especially since I wouldn't be able to hide my bad attitude about both the Army and the War for Iraq.

Even if an insurance company accepts me, in the private sector, the co-pays could amount to tens of thousands of dollars if the cancer should re-emerge.

There are no MOSs that I would enjoy in the Army; I am totally dissatisfied with my current MOS--intelligence analyst. The Air Force has an MOS that I'd enjoy--Computer Programmer--but the Air Force is not hiring right now.

I have a year left on my contract.

What should I do?

My son has already talked to a recruiter. They have done his background check everyting looks good. About nine months ago he was was pulled over at a check point they found marijuana in his car. His car was seized. He cooperated with DEA. And so far no charges have been filed. It doesn't appear that there will be any since this was nine months ago. The officials were of the opinion that he was set up as a decoy. Now the big question; there are no charges, it doesn't show in his background check, if he is sworn in and a year from charges are filed by some weird reason, will he get into trouble with the army. As of right now there are no charge pending.

I thought I'd post this so it isn't lost, as memory erodes. When I left to go to Iraq in 2004 my daughter had just turned 2. She's 5 now (soon 6) and doesn't remember a lot about when I was gone, but when asked last year what she did remember, she said:

"I remember standing by the front door with Mommy and looking out the window, and our faces were like this..." and here she made a very sad frowning face.

Almost made me cry.

I was (thankfully) only deployed for under a year, but it was very difficult for me and for my family. I know that I am very fortunate to have avoided a longer tour (or multiple tours), to have come home safely, and to have gotten out of the Army upon completion of my contracted obligation with them. But my thoughts return frequently to my time in Iraq, and to those who continue to serve in harm's way while their families miss them.

My boyfriend is in the Army. He just left this past July. He'll be in California for the next 2 years or so, and after that, who knows; maybe he'll be lucky enough to stay in the US, or maybe he'll be sent somewhere overseas. Wherever he goes, he'll be there for another 4 years. In total, that means my boyfriend and I plan to be in a long-distance relationship for the next 6 years of our lives.

The first question everyone asks is, "Why?" Why, at such a young age, would I want to spend a majority of the next 6 years alone? Why would I want to put myself through such heartache, such uncertainty, such longing? Why would I trust someone to stay loyal to me for all that time while I'm not around? Why would I date someone so far away when I could date someone who lives closer? All these questions, and valid ones at that, have one answer. Call me stupid, call me crazy, call me naive, call me young, call me whatever you want; I'll probably agree with you. But I always say, nobody can truly understand something until they've been in the same situation. That being said, not many people can understand my situation.

This is for the ones that do.

This is for the people who know what it feels like to kiss the one they love for the last time, knowing they won't be able to even so much as look at them again in the months ahead;

for the ones who know what it feels like to wait all day long for a short phone call at night;

to make a long story short, I'm a cadet at the USAF Academy, and my fiance deploys to Iraq in 3 weeks with the 3rd ACR from Ft. Hood, TX. we hadn't seen each other since May, and were finally together this 3 day weekend. it was the best weekend of my life, between just being with him, and his proposal. we said goodbye last night, and now I won't see him until his mid-tour leave in May. it just hurts so badly, to know I can't be with him, that I can't do anything about it. I mean, being a part of the military myself, I understand why he's there, what he's fighting for, I just almost wish it would be over with already so he could come home.

I was looking around online for some support, as I have yet to meet anyone here in this situation! Just wondering how to make it, how all of you brave ladies have made it. Thank you and God Bless.

IRR MOB Orders?

I have a few questions that I hope the members of this site can help me with. I was active duty 2001-2005 got out finished my master's degree. The day I graduated I got MOB orders back to Ft. Benning. My MOS was err is 11B but I have never served in an Infantry unit. Now then my MOB orders are assigning me to an Infantry guard unit out of Maryland. It is my understanding that I will get a few weeks of training and then off to my unit. A few weeks of training for a job I have never done seems a little weak, not to mention that I will be an E-4 running around with 6 years of college under my belt. My question is does anyone know if the job I actually performed while on active duty (training instructor) will be considered or is the Army just pulling names out of a hat (similar to the draft)? Additionally, what are my chances at an MSO transfer or a change in MOS after MOB orders have been cut?

This is my first deployment and to top it we are getting married during his mid-tour leave in JAN. I love so help on how to cope with this and also i have a question. After the wedding can I get military housing on his post in Italy, so that I can be there when he gets home and also be able to be close to women that are going through the same thing? Or do I have to wait til he gets back? If anyone has any idea or has had to go through the same thing I could sure use some help. THANKS!!

Okay it's been 3 months so far since my husband left on his second tour. I thought it would be easier second time around but nope. Not even close. In fact this has been a lot harder than I ever even anticipated! We have a daughter and more bills and more responsibility that I need to be in charge of. And not that I didn't care when he left last time but this time it means more because we shared so much together in the 13 months he was home. I really got to know him in a way I never understood before. He means so much more to me. I just want him home so we can reconnect again. I just miss him so much. [:'(]

Painting the roads of IRAQ with paint tracked and spoted everywhere.

Just take a can of paint and have it drip out the back of a car and drive up and down a dirt road every few hours for a week with other cars using that road and you will see the road spoted everywhere with that paint in a week. Now try and hide something like a IED in the road or on the side of it buried and see if you can not easily see such a thing. Now take a few cars and do the same thing with diffrent colors and over time changing colors to new diffrent ones giving the road diffrent aged layers of painted spots that would be almost impossible to paint by a human to match any area that has been dug up.

If you had even just 1 out of 20 army trucks, tanks, transports having a device that droped paint balls about 1 per 1/10 of a mile it would create a painted spoted landscape covering everything. Having paintballs or paint that is wet that gets tracked by people, and cars will cover a large area with tiny spots of paint that will dry all over the place. Using diffrent colors and how much you use will create a painted spoted road that a Human trying to paint to match any area that is dug up or disturbed would be very difficult at best.

Ever see paint spilled out of a moving car that has dried all over the road? Notice how the paint is spread and spoted everywhere from such a accident? Even a little paint will be tracked and spread of a large distance even very far from the paint spill itself.

You can have a paint gun even shoot paint balls every so often into the air that would fall to the ground and splat to be tracked by anything touching it.

Using paints that show beter or only with night vision or other army optical gear would make it hard for anybody to dig or place a device into a road with out the road showing the paint spoted pattern as diffrent.

And over time the diffrent paints and amounts used that will be randomly changed would make it very hard to match a pattern that time has had many diffrent ages of faded and colors and even diffrent use would create.

I thought long and hard about how to end this blog, and posted another pretty irate rant to it... but thought better of it a few hours later (thankfully, before anyone important saw it.)

The way I see it, I've done a good amount of bitching on this blog since day 1. And that's regrettable, given the many positive things I've seen. But you know how the old saying goes in business... If someone goes to a restaurant and likes it, they'll tell maybe 3 people. If they hate it, they'll tell 10. In my case, this restaurant sucks, and I've told thousands.

I get the impression that lots of people don't really understand me at all, due to this blog. The image that probably comes to peoples minds is a troublemaker, someone who will do whatever he can to subvert things around him.

And you know what, that perception is totally my fault. I was talking to the commander today, and tried to sum up the things I *** about in broad terms, but maybe I didn't do a decent job.

The bottom line is: big *** is going well, it's the small *** that irritates the hell out of me.

Let's talk about some good stuff for a minute, to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

As a brigade, our convoy security teams find far more IEDs than other convoy teams. We've got damn good soldiers who have saved a lot of lives by virtue of simply paying attention and doing their jobs.

The iraq war in general has caused numerous advances in soldier safety. For example: how many infantry soldiers had even SEEN a set of Interceptor body armor before Iraq happened? We didn't train with it, and didn't use it. Previous wars were fought without it, and more soldiers died as a result.

Or how about battlefield trauma? QuikClot, enhanced prosthetics, and new surgical techniques are saving lives, shortening recovery time, and enhancing quality of life, not just for soldiers, but civilians as well. In the beginning of the war, soldiers rolled around in soft skinned vehicles with no ballistic protection. Now, we have fully armored HMMWVs which, while not perfect, are much better at keeping troops alive. And don't even get me started on the advancements in EOD as a job. Used to be, EOD troops went to ranges and blew up old munitions. Now, they disarm and destroy deadly IEDs with the latest in sophisticated equipment.

We have soldiers who have been battle hardened... in the army I was in, very few troops had actually seen real combat. Now, the force is comprised of experienced warriors who have actually proven they can fight. Gone are the days of "Miles warriors" who play high tech lasertag to earn their pay.

On the company level, we've got good vehicles, good crews, and good weapons. We have soldiers with a lot of road time, and they will be a benefit to their units when they return home to pass on their knowledge to new soldiers.

And, on my level, I'm out of debt. :-)

The things that piss me off are the little things. I can't use minnesota tuition assistance because I'm "not part of the unit." I can't wear my IRR patch because I'm "part of the unit." I'm pissed that they're giving infantry soldiers CABs. It's an insult, because CABs are given to a lot of fobbits who never leave the wire. We're infantry soldiers, in an infantry brigade. I turn in a vehicle to maintenance with serious problems, and the vehicle's faults are signed off without a single wrench being turned.

And i know i'll hear "But the regulations/policy/guidance say ..."

I don't care. That doesn't make it right. Policy and guidance can still be misguided and wrong.

Is any of that gonna change? No. But that doesnt mean i'm not mad about it. I'm also pissed that I can't reenlist into the guard while in country, if i chose to do so. IRR soldiers who want to stay in the national guard can't recieve a tax free bonus unless they get lucky enough to find a recruiter that can push all the paperwork through during the same month they get back. As a result, we also can't receive schools while our guard brethren can. I submitted awards for my soldiers for saving some lives by cordoning off an IED (which required driving past it) so a civilian convoy didn't drive past it. I was told they "were just doing their jobs."

Yet we have people getting bronze stars just for being here, and many of the folks who will receive it don't leave the wire.

So yeah, I'm a bit bitter, and a tad upset.

And despite all that, I've gone out on every mission they've asked. I've moved to different outposts, lived in tents and metal conexes. I've travelled down shitty roads, put myself in danger time and again for this brigade, despite my ETS more than 4 years ago. I've sweated alongside my minnesota and kentucky compadres, and I've had some insurgent dipsticks try to blow me up. I've done everything they've asked, and you know what I want?

I want to be left alone, and I want to go home. I don't want to deal with any more retarded *** between now and then.

Just wanted to say "Welcome Home" a bit late to all of the Vietnam Vets out there, after reading Bob Parsons' post on the subject. My uncle served in Vietnam and has never been much interested in talking about it, though my own Iraq experience has led us to discuss things a bit recently. All I can say is, thanks to everyone who went, and though I wasn't around at the time, I apologize for all of the ungrateful idiots who treated you (and likely continue to treat you) so poorly.

One of Bob's commenters suggested this book, "Unheralded Victory", which I'll have to check out. It sounds interesting, if nothing else (no, I haven't read it yet, so I can't comment further).

Anyways, this is the kinda stuff the army should be spending money on, instead of ice cream in the chow hall, and generator mechanics from KBR that make 80 grand a year (when we have an MOS in the army that does that as well.)

Point is: this system has a couple of great effects. Number one, it keeps gunners safer, as they're not in the turret, but sitting in the cab with the rest of the crew. Two, it's a friggin force multiplier because of it's superb scanning capabilities.

Kudos to the dudes at PEO Soldier for developing and fielding this, Kudos to my unit for getting ahold of some and distributing them.

So what are our glorious leaders doing? Giving us the option to wear the Kentucky national guard's patch, because apparently our company is no longer D 1/125, but B 2/123 Armor. When they whined and said we couldn't wear the IRR patch, the supposed reason was that we were "attached to a brigade or larger element." Well, so are these rednecks. Why do they get to wear their patch and we can't? And furthermore, how does a FA battery from minnesota magically "become" an armor company from kentucky.

I'll Serve in Etka Organization

Alright, it seems I'm getting lucky!

Today I went out to a central camp in Tehran to know where should I serve after this. Thankfully today was a good day and I got good news!

I'll spend remained months of my service (18 months) in a division of Iran Ministry of Defense which is named Etka organization where they're responsible to provide some kind of support for military guys and their families but this support is just limited to providing foods, meets and some other daily requirements for a family not providing weapons, gadgets and other military requirements. Etka has several markets around Iran in small and big cities and I can call it a semi-military organization because 70% of this organization are normal peoples. Even their military employees don't wear military clothes.

I haven't started my work there but I knew this organization to some extent and am happy at first glance.

I'm not sure but it seems that I'll serve 8 hours a day (from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM) from Saturday to Wednesday (five days a week) and this sounds good to me.

Well, now I have a better feeling than two months ago and can plan for my life. Since I got back to home from training things are getting better and better everyday and I'm returning to a daily routine.

End of Training

Yesterday I finished my military training, got my Second Lieutenant rank and got back to home. Till next Monday I can rest then they'll let me know where should I serve in next 18 months but I don't think they kick me to another city again.

I want to write more about training in my holiday so stick with this blog if you're interested. I hadn't written about my training camp place but now that I left there it's possible to give more details. My training camp was in a mountain near Abeyek town near Qazvin city in Qazvin province. This camp belongs to Iran Ministry of Defense. Ministry of Defense is responsible for managing all armies and supporting them in order to defense against any attack to Iran. Actually we (guys who serve in ministry) don't involve in military operations very much and our main job is to provide required means for all military forces in Iran and support them.

So most likely I'll spend remained months somewhere in Tehran like an employee and probably won't wear military clothes.

I have no Idea if this is how I am suppose to do this or not, blogs confuse me, so please bear with me!

I was born in Leavenworh,Kansas on August 29, 1974, I believe the man who is my father was working at the time in the DB on post. I have two names :

Ronald Eugene Walker and Willie C. Ross and I need to know if anybody out in Cyberspace was at the DB in Fort Leavenworth possibly from between 1970-1979 that would know anybody by these names who had a daughter named Sanamu.

I have tried calling the Fort but nobody can help me without a SS# and I don't have anything.

I can't talk to my mother because...well we just don't do that.

This is something that I am doing for me and I would really like to find one or both of these men.

Iran and British Sailors

Nowadays Iran and British sailors are at top news (what has happened to nuclear energy?!). I didn't know about this until my last holiday and never thought that it can become very sensitive like this.

Probably you're familiar with military stuff and know that this is something usual between two neighbor countries so shouldn't surprise anyone. British armies are in Iraq and Iraq has long borders with Iran both in land and sea.

In my opinion current political position between Iran, Europe and US is making this problem harder and harder. Unfortunately European countries did a wrong job about this problem and UK denied the problem from the base!

Apparently British sailors are arrested inside Iran and some sailors confessed this. On the other hand their GPS device is showing that not only for one time but also for five times they were in Iran.

However, this isn't important at all. No one in Iran (from normal people) wants to persist on this and disturb a few sailors just because they were in Iran for 5-6 times. Everyday many Afghan terrorists get inside Iran and move drugs from east to west and other countries. Iran Police force doesn't arrest them and just watches them to destroy this country! But unfortunately this problem is going to be something similar to Iran nuclear energy. Both Western countries and Iran are making the problem harder and don't want to go back from their positions. I hope that other countries don't interfere in this problem to make it harder to solve and Iran government doesn't keep these sailors anymore. With current political position and what western media are trying to show it's better to release these sailors as soon as possible. All in all, all countries must respect to borders otherwise we won't have peace in our world anymore. British sailors did a wrong job and no one can deny this.

+ How stupid are these governments! They're looking for something to start a new war! "Hey, why that water is blue?! Let's attack to somewhere!" They're idiot, idiot! The interesting point is Iranian government is ready to defense from Iran in all cases but how?! They force young men to go ahead and die for their wrong decisions!

+ These Iranian Police forces are lazy. They eat and sleep all day long. I don't know how they could arrest 15 British sailors! Be sure British sailors are in hotel and have a better position than me in camp!

What's Up with My Training?

You may ask why I don't update my army blog. There are some main reasons:

For a long time (35-40 days) I was sick and was resting in bed when I could get back to home.
When I get back to home from training don't want to think about what has happened to me and remember those pains for a few days.
I'm so tired and want sometime to rest. On the other hand I have to work on some projects and keep up the other blog so you can believe that I don't have much time for blogging about training.
There are many things to write about training as experiences but I prefer to write them after service because they need much time to be described and also I worry about writing about them at this time because they may say I'm spying and give me more troubles (yes, you can't imagine the position!!).

So wait for next two weeks until I finish my training and come back to home. Then I'll try to write more about my training experiments.

+ Currently I'm at home and will leave here tomorrow afternoon to start the last part of my training which is two weeks maximum.

Troops to pull out?

People who continue to ask for the troops to pull out do not understand the entire purpose of the military: To win wars. That's it. That is the only reason why a military in any country exists. And just what do these people who demand that the military come home think they are going to do when they get home? They are going to train for the next conflict! That's what the military does, it trains for wars and how to win them. And just what were the soldiers and sailors doing before the war began? They were training to go and win that damn thing!

People say, "But so many lives have been lost!" Yep, image that...soldiers dying in a time of war. Wow, must be a new concept. As a medic with 24 years of service and a tour in Iraq i have learned that there are two rules in combat: Rule number one: young men die. Rule number two: medics cannot change rule number one. Young men are GOING to die.

Dying is not painful. Living as a coward is.

And isn't it funny, that the very same people who want the military to come home are the very same ones who have never served nor will they serve because simply stated: the do not understand what the military is for- to win wars.
